I am now returning to the subject of bars and taverns with: "the bar and tavern quality and trait generator" time to make some rolls: Roll 1d10 and compare on the chart below to get the bars initial ratings. If the number gets modified later by a trait later, it can improve the quality (or lower it), but it doesn't affect other modifiers generated (eg if you roll a 6 for food quality, and later get a +2 mod, that goes to an 8, so average food becomes good food, but don't alter the price because of it.) food quality: this is the quality of the food of the establishment, unless modified by a trait elsewhere. # quality price mod <=0 don't have it or don't touch it 1 bad -2 2-3 edible -1 4-7 average 0 8-9 good -1 10 great -2 11+ excellent drink quality: this is the quality of what drinks they do serve, typically local beverages, unless modified by a trait later. # quality price mod <=0 drink the water, its better 1 just wash the food down, quick -2 2-3 just drink it -1 4-7 average 0 8-9 good +1 10 great +2 11+ excellent service: this is the quality of service you get at such a place # quality price mod <=0 you have to fight to get served 1 horrible -2 2-3 lousy -1 4-7 average 0 8-9 good +1 10 great +2 11+ excellent atmosphere: everything else considered, how does the place _feel_. Some places are just more fun or enjoyable to be in. # quality price mod <=0 why are you here? 1 smells like something nasty -2 2-3 very uncomfortable, nobles in a thieves den -1 4-7 average 0 8-9 enjoyable +1 10 very comfortable +2 11+ you could die here if the atmosphere after trait modifiers ends up above or below average, roll below to get the idea of why it has such an atmosphere. The greater the difference, the more of whatever it is there is. Note, some people might be comfortable where others might not, just like some people hate food where others love what is other terrible. 1d10 good bad 1 relaxing smells like fish 2 constant fun atmosphere next to the stables 3 constant music dead animals hung from the rafters 4 near peaceful lake or stream animals head on walls 5 "artsy" live vicious animals in cagesin the corners 6 stages plays den of scum and villainy 7 quiet and restful blacksmith shop next door, always working on something 8 fine rose gardens nearby leatherworkers next door 9 famous bard hangs here fights always breaking out 10 feels just like home cold, so cold... prices: this is the price of the food and drinks, roll 2d10 to get your initial number then apply the cumulative price modifier. # "description" cost multiple <=0 nothing is any good anyways .1 1-4 cheap .5 5-8 inexpensive .75 9-12 average 1 13-14 pricey 1.5 15-16 expensive 2 17-18 very expensive 3 19-20 wow! 5 21+ only the nobles go here anyways 10 special traits: these are the special things that make a tavern unique roll 1d10 and add either: 1)the total negative price modifiers as a positive number (so if bar has neg price mod of "-5" (this doesn't include any positive #'), add 5. there has to be some reason these places are open. 2)OR add 1/2 the total positive mods+1(round up) (not including any neg. modifiers) if you had total +4 price mod and a total -2 price mods you could add +3 to the roll. 1 if roll unmodified, no traits at all 2-3 no traits 4-6 one trait 7-10 two traits 11 three traits, but _only_ if using method #2 from above (from pos. modifiers) the traits: remember any modifiers to any food, drink, service qualities are to the number rolled on 1d10 at first. eg. if you rolled a 5 for average food, and you got a +3 for some trait the food quality would become good, but nothing else (like prices) would get modified further. if you roll the same trait twice, you may roll again, or somehow improve that trait you have already. 1d5 1 food table 2 events table 3 money table 4 feature table 5 people table food and drink(roll 1d10) ------ 1)serves excellent breads and pastries +1 to overall food quality, +3 for breads and pastries only, minimum of good +2 to overall price 2)serves wine and drinks not common to area, eg, vendel mead in vodacce +1 to overall drink quality, minimum of average for the uncommon drinks only +3 price for uncommon drinks only, minimum average 3)serves own brand of candy, minimum average quality service +1 4)serves own brand of drink. a local drink, but they make their own brand +2 drink quality for own drink 5)largest selection of wine in county atmosphere +2 price +3 service +1 6)uses weird or unusual cups dragon shaped mugs, pure crystal goblets atmosphere +1 price +3 7)doesn't serve alchohol, has other non-alchohol beverages +2 drink and food quality +1 service 8)keeps fresh fruit for serving +2 food quality +3 price +1 atmosphere 9)cheap ale always has ale (+2 quality) for sale at 1 cent a quart 10))"4-star" inn or restaurant food, drink, service, atmosphere all +2, all minimum average price+3 events ---------- 1)known for highstakes gambling atmosphere -2 prices +5 drinks and food +2 service+1 2)grand opening. this won't last for long, but... prices -4 drinks, food, service, atmosphere all +3 3)never closes. the place is open 24 hours a day atmosphere +2 service -1 food, drinks -1 4)the place offers delivery or takeout service+1 food -1 atmosphere -1 5)has daily luncheon specials during lunch only: food+2 price-2 6)requires reservations service+2 atmosphere+1, minimum average price+5 7)cape and cane required service +2, atmosphere+2, minimum average price+6 8)open until dawn drink+2 service+1 atmosphere+1 9)holds unusual animal races rats, lizards, chickens, whatever prices-2 atmosphere-2 10)appears to be closed, need to know secret to get in drink, food +1 money (roll 1d6) ----------- 1)swordsmen guild members get 1/2 price atmosphere+1, drink +2 2)explorer society members get 1/2 price food, drink, atmosphere +1 3)unescorted ladies get free drinks atmosphere +2 price+4 4)takes no credit atmosphere +1 5)credit freely available atmosphere -1 6)bartender takes barter for food and drink common esp. in the ussuran lands or parts of town. features (roll 1d6) --------------- 1)winner of some award 1d10 even: good award, food, drink, service, atmosphere all +2 odd: "raz" award, food , drink, service, atmosphere all -2 2) has mirrored walls and ceilings atmosphere +1 prices+2 3)indoor waterfall or fountain atmosphere +2 4)huge fireplace in center of room atmosphere +1 drinks+1 5)has stained glass windows and tables atmosphere+1 prices+4 food, drink +1 6)the place is haunted roll 1d10 even keeps the place interesting, service and atmosphere +1 odd keeps most people away, atmosphere -2 people (roll 1d6) ----------------- 1) serving wenches are all above average appearance atmosphere +2 2)famous swordsmand frequents the place drink, food, service all minimum average 3)famous pirate frequents the place service+2, minimum average atmosphere -2 4)famous noble frequents the place drink, food, service, atmosphere all minimum average atmosphere +2 prices +4 5)very rude serving folk, but good food service -2, maximum lousy food and drink +2 , minimum good 6)the barkeep is very good at throwing knives roll 1d10 even he keeps the place in order, atmosphere +2 odd place is rowdy as it is, atmosphere -2 Like all generators, this one can always be tweaked to fit your own use, and I hope it sparks some creative thoughts. May your sword always be sharp and your powder fresh.
