Anyone come up with a good malfunction system? Here's what I may use. It seems fairly simple. Every time you fire a pistol or musket (or cannon, I suppose), pick one of your dice to be a 'malfunction' die. It does not matter if you keep that die or not for the roll. Whether or not you keep it, if it comes up a 1, there has been a malfunction. Consult this chart: Roll Result 1 Gun does not fire. Try again next action, if you wish. 2 Gun does not fire. Priming powder lost. Takes one action to replace the priming powder. 3 Explosion. Take appropriate damage to the firing hand/arm (check the explosion chart in the rulebooks). Ball not fired. 4 Minor explosion. No damage to firer, but the gun cannot be fired until repaired (Several hours and a gunsmith roll vs 15 or higher.). Ball not fired. 5 Minor explosion. 1 flesh wound to firing hand/arm. Gun is destroyed and cannot be repaired. Ball not fired. 6 Bad/wet powder. The gun must be cleaned out and reloaded. This will take at least ten minutes. Gun does not go off. 7 Low charge. Range is reduced to 20 yds for pistols and 60 yds for muskets. Pistols do 2k2 damage, muskets do 3k2. 8 High charge. Range is 40 yds for pistols and 90 yds for muskets. Add 1k0 damage. Add 10 to the number to hit the target. Firer takes 1 flesh wound. 9 Ball off-balance. Add 5 to the number to hit the target. 10 Gun damaged. Shot hits as normal, but gun must then be repaired (See #4 above) before it can be fired again. For anyone using matchlocks in their game (which I might), I'd have them malfunction on a 1 or a 2, not just a 1. Any comments?
