O-boy. Here we go. :)

Merlin never performs anything that fits the "fireball" style of magic
found in D&D.
Don't take my word for it, go check it out for yourself.

Gandalf never performs anything that fits the "fireball" style of magic
found in D&D. He's even got the Elvin ring of fire and the closest thing he
does is some fireflies to scare away some orks. Okay, he sets his own sword
on fire, sometimes. But that's about it.

Don't make me go there, man.

Plus, there is no way to create an evil,
>necromantic sorcerer to harass the heroes.

Necromancy and demonology.
