Date: Thu, 29 Jul 1999 12:03:39 From: Scott Gearin Subject: [7thSea] The Vendel Bounties A public service announcement from your friends at thee Vendel League The Vendel Bounties (Adapted from and inspired by "Ocean Hunter: The Seven Seas Adventure". Interested parties may request stats by contacting Jan Yern, at shiba_toma@Mindspring.com. Further updates to the Vendel Bounties will be forthcoming as soon as we reset the movable type on the new printing presses :).) The Vendel League has compiled a list of the most dangerous beasts to be found in the great seas surrounding Theah through which trade passes. Each of these monsters represents a grave threat to the continuing advancement of mankind through travel, discovery, and commerce. In light of this terrible menace, the League now officially offers substantial bounties to any individuals who bring conclusive evidence that they have destroyed one of these sea-going minions of Legion! (Note: one half of the bounty will be paid upon receipt of the physical remains, with the second half being rendered after a six-month observation period to determine that no further ships are subject to the beast's terrorization. Further restrictions may aply.) Trade Sea "Karkinos" Four Ships lost, 93 dead. An enormous and ill-tempered crab, Karkinos attacks (scuttles) ships at anchor along the northern shores of Eisen and the southern coves of Vendel. It capable of movement on land and preys upon both fishermen and sailors. It is a quick and canny fighter says one survivor, "smart enough to keep the rocks at it's back and use every leg an' claw to snatch men into those terrible sideways jaws!" Rust coloured with a yellow underbelly, the beast is reputed to be over 30 feet across and 15 tall. Bounty: 5000G "Medusa" 22 souls lost. The medusa is a malicious, strangely aggressive specimen of the many "sea jellies" which are sometimes seen in northern waters. A soft tan colour, and over 21 feet long, Medusa draws scores of lesser jellies in its wake as it swims around sailors gone overboard. The screams of the dying are particularly hideous. Bounty is for the entire creature, chiefly intact, for medical study. Bounty: 700G Forbidden Sea "Leviathan" Seven ships lost, 188 dead Not to be confused with the typical whale-like creatures known as 'leviathans', The Leviathan of the Forbidden Sea is a tremendous brute that appears five parts shark, and two parts whale. Both the whale parts being exceptionally BIG. The handful of survivors to The Leviathan's attacks report that the beast always struck the ship once, as if sounding the hulls, then appeared several minutes later as a great rushing wave with teeth visible through the waters. It smashed the ship with no more than three rammings, and then systematically devoured the human crew, leaving livestock to lesser sharks that follow it about. It has a gray-blue back, shading into a white bottom, and a distinctive "killer shark" snout and multiple rows of outward pointed teeth. Bounty: 9000G Dead Tropics "Midgardsorn" Seventeen ships lost, 629 dead Perhaps of greatest concern to the League, though also the most distant, is Midgardsorn, the "World Serpent". Confirmed reports of the monster exist only because an Avalon convoy of seven ships was the target of one of the attacks. The monster, described as more of a muddy green earthworm than serpent, arose in the midst of the convoy, smashing two vessels and swallowing two more in a single gulp. Satisfied, it returned to deeper haunts. Other ships and convoys in route to the south islands have sighted the monster at a distance, or disappeared entirely. While it will be impossible to return the full carcass for study, any group actually large enough to hope to do battle with the creature should be able to transport a convincing body of evidence to League offices.
