Perception Perception is the skill of using ones senses to understand the environment around us. It is highly valued by military scouts, spies, ship’s lookouts, explorer, food tasters and inquisitive courtiers alike. Basic Knacks. Scanning: This knack allows the user to gain information about their environment with a quick look around. This is the manner in which visual perception is most generally used. The Gamesmaster may set a TN for anything that is not immediately apparent the character using this skill, however this does not mean locating anything that is hidden. A higher TN can also be set for objects that are further away. The use of a Telescope with this skill provides 1 unkept dice to the roll, so long as the object being viewed in not close to. Searching: This knack allows the user to hunt for the hidden or lost, it permits close examination of objects to look for clues. The Gamesmaster should set a TN either based on the skill of the concealer of an object, the size of the object or the improbability of its hiding location. This skill can be used to locate those using the Stealth knack, using their skill roll and modifiers as the TN to overcome. The use of a Spy Glass may optionally add 1 unkept dice to this knack. Listening: This skill permits nobles to eaves drop, scout to hear approaching enemies, hunters to hear the sound of baying wolves. The Gamesmaster may set a TN based on how far away the noise is or any obstructions between the source of the noise and the character. The listen skill may optionally be used to locate someone using the Stealth knack. Tracking: As per the Hunter Basic Knack. Taste: This Knack represents the users ability to identify flavours and substances by taste. However it does not detect most toxins or poisons, however it will tell the user if something tastes good or bad. This knack is very popular amongst connoisseurs of good food and wine. A TN should be set by the GM to identify mixed or unfamiliar flavours Smell: This knack allows the user to identify a substance by smell. However with the foul stench in the Montaigne slums some may regret this skill. It is good for recognising an excellent bouquet during wine tasting. A TN should be set by the GM to identify unusual or delicate smells. Advanced Knacks. Lip Reading: As per Courtier. Cold Read: As per Performer. Taste Analysis: This knack allows the user to taste and identify what a substance contains. It can be used to detect poisons and chemicals. It is very popular amongst the Food Tasters of the Crescent Moon Empire. A TN should be set by the GM based on the poisoners skill roll. Judge Distance: This knack permits the user to make an approximation of distance. If you are planning to leap onto a chandelier then it better be in range, if you are a lookout spotting islands then you need to know how far away it is, if you are a Bowman then you need to know the range to hit your mark.
